All of this pretty well happened. Names of people and places have changed. These little incidents show that life isn’t as random as it ought to be … and suggest that something like the matrix really exists.

Train-spotting

Danny Hilton-Wilkes wondered why his train hadn’t left yet. He had been attending a reading of a charity book in a Brighton bookshop two evenings before. He’d spent the previous day with his mother, helping to celebrate her birthday. He now had to return to Wales, which meant going via London, as he was going to be at another reading of another charity book at a nature park the next day. And he needed to get back to his dog. So, it would be rather good if this train did something about moving.

His business partner in the small publishing company he helped run had not been able to attend the Brighton reading. He had to travel to London later as it was his daughter’s birthday and couldn’t really afford both trips or an overnight stay.

Danny stared out of his train window. A train drew into the opposite platform. At last his own started moving. The passengers from the newly arrived train spilled out on to the platform. One of them was George who walked right past Danny’s window.

Remote remotes

Lulu Brown was glad to get back to her room after the first day of an interesting but demanding academic conference.

I think I’ll just watch a bit of TV before I go to sleep, she thought. She hunted high and low for the TV remote. She moved everything off the table, looked in all of the drawers and even climbed up on a chair to see whether it was on the shelf with the TV.

So much for four star luxury then. A shame really, she thought. The TV guide provided by the hotel had looked promising.

The next morning, as she made an early morning cuppa, there was the remote, exactly where you’d expect it, right next to the TV guide.

“You do know this place is supposed to be haunted, don’t you?” a colleague said at breakfast the next day.

Aimhigher aims higher

Sal Thomas was driving home from an academic conference. That morning she had given a presentation on her work with the Aimhigher programme which brings talented kids form deprived areas into universities for a week with a view to suggesting university might be an option for them later.
