This missionary is shifted to a dimension like ancient Egypt with powerful magicians.
Orgran Naag had been fascinated with ancient Egypt since he was a child and experienced programs about similar cultures. When he learned about one of the cultures that still existed, he studied it thoroughly until he knew more about it than most of the citizens of that dimension. When he left the seminary in 1933 he was ready to spread the Gospel to a superstitious people that believed in a pantheon of gods and also believed in the power of magic. He just hoped that his advanced technology wouldn’t make the people think he was a god. But when going against magicians, he needed an edge.
Orgran kept most of his equipment in another dimension and had transdimensional access to it. He also shifted to the dimension with a male biosyn that he named Provess who would be his healer as well as his partner. Both wore personal force fields, even though Provess didn’t need one as much since he was a synthetic. They also had short staffs that measured a meter in length that could emit particle beams, tractor beams, and bursts of energy potent enough to blast holes through walls a meter thick. They kept the staffs in leather holsters as if they were swords. When they needed energy, they could be shifted to the dimension where the hyperlight speed reactor was kept for a quick charge that transferred a gigawatt of energy into the staffs in less than a minute. Since the energy pack could use the electromagnetic field of the world, the power was extended about 30 times longer than if the power pack couldn’t tap the field.
The pair entered the royal city of Janvuor which was a familiar name. But Orgran forgot where he had heard it before. In the distance were huge pyramids that were the tallest structures in the region. There were five of them arranged with the tallest one at the apex of a pentagon, two shorter ones on the right and left of the top one, and the two shortest at the bottom of the pentagon. They ranged in height from 110 meters for the short ones, 145 meters for the two medium height ones, and 180 meters for the tallest one. Their height and arrangement was familiar too.
The city looked almost like ancient Memphis during the times of the Pharaohs. There were slaves and free people walking through the streets avoiding the chariots and carts that occupied the center of the broad thoroughfares. Beautiful women with painted faces and revealing tunics and gowns were followed by slaves, both men and women, who held parasols over their heads and catered to their every need. If they were thirsty, a slave woman would run to a public drinking fountain and fill a gold or silver chalice with water. If they were hungry, a slave woman would run to one of the food vendors at the side of the street and purchase something for their mistresses to consume. Glazed clay plates, linen napkins, and copper utensils would be discarded in bins that were located on the side of the streets after the users were done with them. Only the chalices were kept since they were so valuable.
