The mistake.

Occupied in the future and the unique role she hoped, Mathilde soon came up regretting the dry and metaphysical discussions which had formerly with Julien. Tired of such lofty thoughts, and sometimes she regretted the moments of happiness she had found with him, these memories seemed remorseless point, she was overwhelmed at certain moments.

But if one has a weakness, she told herself, he deserves a girl like me not to forget his duties as a man of merit; it nor say it’s his beautiful mustache or his grace to ride a horse that enticed me, but his profound discussions on the future that awaits France, his ideas about the similarity that events will overtake us may have with the revolution of 1688 in England. I was seduced, she replied to his remorse, I am a weak woman, but at least I have not been led astray like a doll by the external advantages.

If there is a revolution, why Julien Sorel play it not the role of Roland, and I that of Madame Roland? I prefer this role as that of Madame de Stael: the immoral conduct will be an obstacle in our century. Certainly we will not reproach me one second weakness I should die of shame.
