This run comes from reading one of Frank Atanacio’s post so… its a Frank and to the point poem, pardon the pun.
Further adding a personal write up, on drink drug driving, and the form of sentences.

The road was dark

His lights seem dim

He only had a few

The dog ran loose

The kid chased after

The drunk swore

I only had the few

The mother cried I only had the one.

…………….

The car a great invention making it easy, for people to move from

One area to another in very short times.

Alcohol on the other hand, is a pleasure tool But! sadly is abused by some

The worst abuser in my book, is he or she, Who mixes both the car and alcohol

In some cases leaving many shattered families, Both the victims, and the culprits

Extended families being the most sever. We have all seen the advertisements

For the don’t drink, and drive for many years, I know that In my own country Scotland

We have a terrible record for drink abuse, Which leans over to the drink drive also

What I would like to see is a change of law, making it a more serious crime to drink

Drive or take drugs and drive… If someone drinks and drives he or she

Knows that it is illegal, they also know that a car, or some other vehicle is a

Lethal weapon in the hands of an unfit Driver, and the charges should reflect that

If a drunk man or woman took charge of a gun, then duly starts to use it

In an unfit state, then in the proses kills or maims someone

The charges would be very stern, and serious indeed, so too should that driver

Face the same very Stern charges, and sentences should reflect this too

I,E Drunk or under the influence, causing death or serious injury should

In my book faces charges ranging from, murder in the first degree or

endangerment of life for lesser charges.

I believe if this was the case then we could save very many

Life’s and save many families the grief, and disruption that they face at the moment

With drivers being charged with Driving under the influence of drink or drugs or both

then being handed a drive ban, or fine or both at worst

In most cases Even when there has been loss of life

Friends it is time we made changes to the law to see

These culprits treated as the serious criminals

They are

I have known of a couple of men who drove under the influence of something. In once case a baby in the other car was killed.
In another case a woman was killed. Both of these people were out of prison in short years, but the families of the victims always suffer and cry on the inside.

Brilliant piece of writing. We all will always remember the mother who had only one.

    A very touching share.

Many of these drunk drivers live with the guilt for a lifetime.
More education is needed. People really think that having one or two drinks doesn’t dull their reflexes.

You are right. Heavier punishment should be prescribed for such fellas.

I was lucky to get through that stage in my life without any incidents, but now I am a good boy.
But I do have friends that had to choose between drinking and driving and chose drinking. They get around in buses and cabs and bicycles and riding shotgun.

Life has many facets in our lives. Thank you

Matt, I agree with you, I read in the paper every day of drunk drivers and deaths. It is one of the most serious problems.

  • gaby7 on Feb 28, 2011

Nice share here again! Drunk driving is a punishable crime!

Agree 100% Matt. I always tell my (adult) children, \’\'be vigilant on the roads\’\’ – it\’s the other idiots you have to watch out for. But you have no way of knowing – or preventing. The only answer is harsher penalties to deter everyone from doing the wrong thing. You are so right!

A very significant article…you raised very relevant concerns here. We all should act responsibly, not just for ourselves but also for others.

  • Karen Gross on Mar 19, 2011

I agree completely – killing someone with a weapon as powerful and lethal as a car while under the influence should be the same as if the weapon had been a gun.
In Canada we are beginning to see some stronger penalties, such as having one’s car impounded for three months. Public opinion is slowly changing.
