A story about two archaeologists who find a man from the past.

The Mystery of Ancient Greece

By Andrew Smith

The Strange Writing

A large crowd filed out of the airport buildings toward the passenger Boeing 747-400 jet on the taxiway outside . The plane taxied out , took off , and soon left the airport of Heathrow , London behind.

The hiss of the engine of the jet sounded through the fresh Mediterranean breeze . The plane touched down on the runway in Athens , Greece .

They drove out to the outskirts of Athens toward a large open field where their friend Richard Thompson had told them about a tell out here .

“Well , we’re here, “ said Dr . Whitney to his assistant Mr . Edgar Omskirk.

“I’m glad of that, “ Edgar replied , “2700 kilometres on that jet exhausts me.”

“Me too, “ Dr . Whitney agreed , “oh , is this the tell that guy told us about?”

“I reckon so, “ Edgar replied.

“Whew , climbing that was pretty hard work, “ said Dr . Whitney , “especially in that hot sun.”

There was silence for a moment except for the crying of gulls and the scratching of their trowels . Suddenly Edgar’s attention was drawn to a large rock with something on it .

“Hey , what’s that? “ he said referring to the stone with something on it . There was some Greek writing carved on it with a knife stuck into a log , pointing east.

“I know Greek, “ Dr . Whitney said , “let’s see what it says.”

It read:

Η τελευταία ευκαιρία για να το βρει . Τελευταία ευκαιρία πριν από κάθε αποστολή.

“The final chance to get it . Last chance before it is taken, “ said Dr . Whitney.

“Wonder what that’s referring to, “ Edgar mused.

The Strange Man

After travelling east for some time they came to a large oak tree with boughs that stretched low over the ground .

“I suppose this is the place, “ said Edgar.
