A short essay I created quickly about my perspective of all the bad things we encounter in our lives.

The Necessity of Disaster

Some people may wonder why the world can be so cruel; why there are so many things that can ruin a day, week, month, etc. I have asked myself this also. I didn’t have an opinion about why so much crap always seems to happen, until one day, I decided to think about it a bit. What I came up with is not something we would want to hear: we need disaster. We need all of these bad things to happen when we need them the least. We need wake-up calls. We need for something to give us a non-physical (yet sometimes physical) slap in the face to say, “Wake the **** up! See the real world!” It may seem cruel, but it is necessary. If we were to never receive these wake-up calls, any bad things that happen once in a while or great while would be too much for us to handle. We would all be, in a sense, wussies, compared to what we are today. I do agree, though, sometimes, these calls are a bit too much and necessary… The thing is, though, they are a part of life. I do not like the idea, but they are inevitable.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”
