Judy, one of Lynn’s friends had a high school sweetheart in college in nearby Lexington, Virginia. One Saturday afternoon during the fall of her Junior year Judy asked Lynn to go to Lexington on a shopping trip. Lynn didn’t know it till later but the shopping trip was just an excuse for Judy to visit her boy friend without asking her parents permission.
When they returned to Judy’s VW after shopping the engine would turn over but it wouldn’t start. The two of them opened the hood and looked at the engine. After cranking until the battery would no longer turn over the engine Lynn slammed the hood and leaned against the car. Her dad had been against the trip. Now he would be angry if he had to come for her. Judy saw this as an opportunity to call her friend.
“Let’s call over to the college and have Bill come over and see if he can fix it.” This was the first time she had mentioned Bill. In a flash, Lynn knew the reason for the trip. Judy walked to a pay phone nearby. Lynn just leaned against the car and fumed. She had been used. Judy’s parents were strict, like her own. Judy would not have been allowed to go visit this boy without her parents going with her. Lynn had been a part of the plan and she too had been deceived. She fumed because she knew nobody would believe she had not been a part of the scheme. If her parents found out they would be angry. A few minutes later Judy came back smiling. “Bill will be right over.”
He’s bringing a friend that knows about VW’s. They’ll be here in a few minutes.”
Lynn nodded. Judy was a friend but right now Lynn was not in mood to be cordial.
About ten minutes later a VW which was about three years older than Judy’s and looked like it had seen at least twice as many miles pulled up behind hers. She recognized Bill from high school when he got out the passenger side. He and the driver walked up.
Lynn knew Dave was a Yankee when he said, “Hi,” in an offhand way when Bill introduced him. He walked over and looked at the car without being really civil. Lynn had never liked Yankees and she didn’t see any reason to think he was different from others she knew. “No manners at all, just like a typical Yankee boy,” Lynn thought.
