I see and become the "light".
A week had passed since Jimmy remembered his first dream and although the encounters with his father had helped tremendously, living with Sadie’s negative attitude toward all things in general, was also having it’s effect. His showering of affection brought on by remembering the happy times his parents had shared, appeared to mean nothing to his wife and he began to feel anger rising within him once more. What was he to do? He had supposed that when his manner changed to wards her and Susie, she would shows some signs of gratitude, but such did not prove to be the case. She continued to move about the house like a programmed robot. He left for work each morning at 7:30, his breakfast was on the table precisely at 7. Susie appeared nether hungry nor uncomfortable, a sign that she was fed on a regular basis and her other physical needs were being met, yet he had never seen her mother kiss, hug, or show any sign of affection for their baby girl. Sadie had shown some signs of surprise the first time she had seen him playing with Susie but had ignored them completely since then, not even commenting on the fact that Susie was smiling now and looked forward to his returning home each evening, and their playtime together.
I knew full well that there could be no permanent change until Sadie saw the light. I had been hovering near the ceiling in a corner of Jimmy and Sadie’s house when the thought struck me and I came to my feet with a jolt! That was it – LIGHT – I felt inspired! For days I’d been pondering on how I might get through to Sadie, certainly there had been no positive influences in her life that I could use as I had with Jimmy, now I felt that I had my answer. Light was a universally accepted symbol to which even Sadie might respond. Although she had never talked about it, remembering dreams was old hat to Sadie. They had started in her childhood and were dark and foreboding, filled with frightening creatures. Having no one to turn to for comfort, she eventually accepted such visions as part of her punishment for having been born and now rarely gave them a second thought. I remembered that as a boy, I’d once heard the Rev. Mr. Swift preach a sermon about light dispelling darkness, and although I felt that I’d given it little thought at the time, it must have made an impression on me. Now I was ready to prove the theory.
When Sadie fell asleep that night her usual morbid and gloomy thoughts once more became the foul and hellish creatures that she now took for granted. It was some time before she noticed the softly glowing white light that had somehow penetrated the darkness. Perhaps it would have remained unheeded longer, were it not for the uneasiness it was causing among the wretched fiends who had come to accept her mind as a safe and lasting abode. Sadie watched curiously as the light came ever closer and she found herself being drawn toward it’s warmth despite the ever growing barrage of warnings from the demons that surrounded her. At last, as if embraced by the light and forsaken by the devils that had accompanied her for so long, she slept peacefully for the first time in many years.
