More time travel.

I had been in ancient Egypt less then a day and already I was in love with the place. The language which I understood perfectly, (another advantage that ghosts have over the living) had such a beautiful resonance that I felt I could listen to those people talking for the rest of my non-life. There were however, things that needed doing and I turned my attention to Giza and the great sphinx and instantly I was standing beside it. I still hadn’t gotten use to this method of travelling and was rather startled to find myself there so quickly. Time travel I noted was a little different, unless of course there was a short cut that I didn’t yet know about. I had read about this vast monument and the various tales of why, when, and how it had been built but to stand beside it was still breath taking. I soon discovered that I needed to be at least two hundred feet away in order to see it in perspective. The gigantic creature with the head of a bearded man and the body of a lion, was 240 feet long and stood 66 feet in height! I had a strange feeling that there was more to this creature than any living person knew and I was determined discover it’s secret. Clearly it had already stood there for thousands of years and had not been built around this period as my history books had suggested. As I once again prepared for time travel and tried to decide on the date that I should enter, the number 10,000 BC suddenly appeared in my mind as if out of nowhere. As I set the dials and prepared to affirm the right incantations, I took one more look at the great sphinx and was startled to see it wink at me!

Though fascinated, as the decades and centuries passed before me in reverse, this time there was no temptation to stop along the way. Bloodshed was everywhere as the various tribes fought each other and among themselves. As the year 10,000 BC approached, I prepared to touchdown near the great sphinx itself. Imagine my excitement to discover that though the structure was all but complete, hundreds of workers were still busy with the finishing touches. I was not surprised by the changes in the language but was immediately struck by the fact that those in authority appeared to have adopted a new dialect as if influenced by a superior culture. Indeed I soon discerned that those in charge of building the great sphinx, spoke the language with such an accent that it obviously wasn’t their native tongue. Curiosity had now gotten the best of me and I knew I had to learn more about this apparently superior race. Where had they come from and why were they here? It was time for some serious eavesdropping.
