A terryfing glimpse into a Nuclear conflict in the cold war.

1989 Lakenheath

The mist rolls across the concrete runway which swirls around the wings of the Valkyrie. The two F111E supersonic fighters have been running up to normal working temperature by the ground crews. The Valkyrie does not require warming and eats fuel at such a rate its just not viable for a warm up. The two pilots of the Valkyrie walk slowly over to the all white six engine MK3 capable bomber. Captain Rogers breaks the silence,

“You up for this Barnes? I mean this is for real right you know that?”

Lieutenant Barnes nodded and replied.

“Of course lets get I done time is short!”

The pilot and co-pilots were ready and waiting in the F111E’s, they carried a full complement of Sidewinder missiles and a cannon pod attached to the underside of the fuselage. F111E G-George and D-Donald sat astride the huge Valkryie bomber coiled like a snake waiting to strike! Captain Rogers put on his flight helmet and thumbed open his radio,

“This is Captain Rogers in friendly bird permission to start engines and make for target?”

“This is mission control that’s affirm go for mission at all haste the clock is ticking!”

Lieutenant Barnes nodded to Captain Rogers and the start sequence was initiated. Fuel pumps were primed the igniters were set to on. A dull whine was heard as the turbo jets with re-heat were spooled up. Capt. Rogers advance the throttles to 90% and the Valkryie shot down the runway like a bullet from a gun! At 200 knots Capt. Rogers pulled back on the control column and F-Freddie Valkryie rotated to flight and set course for Russia!

G-Gorge and D-Donald settled into a rough bridging formation straddling the Valkryie, Capt. Rogers opened the comm link to the fighters,

“Friendly birds we are going to translate into supersonic flight and hit the deck for incursion mission are you ready over?”

“This is G-George in Friendly bird 2 roger that over”

Capt. Rogers fire walled the three throttle levers and the six General Electric Turbo Jets went to 100% thrust! At zero feet. The sea became just a colour a mixture of grey and blue. The Valkryie was carrying the Blue Steel British made Thermo-Nuclear stand off missile. Washington and London had given the green light for a pre-emptive strike on Russia the dock yard at Minsk was the AP (Aiming Point). The blast yield was estimated at 5 miles kill range.

You are a great writer and I’m so glad this is fiction and not reality.

Nuclear war isn’t a subject I’d feel comfortable writing about. Just too many deaths.
