The otto man tells a story of a young man from my community who had a very amicable personality but years of constant denigration due to his unusual facial features eroded his self esteem and eventually dulled and killed his spirit.
The Otto man: The ugliest black Boy in Westmoreland
Otto was the ugliest baby born in Jamaica at the time or according to my mother he was the most hideous boy in the western region of Jamaica. By adolescence Otto was accustomed to being called the ugliest boy around the town of Westmoreland.
Otto was mocked by the boys and was a source of comic relief for the women who laughed at his less than familiar and pleasing facial features. Otto was very dark and he had huge thick lips that protruded like a bird’s beak. He had cock eyes and a big nose that flared across his face like a fork turn backwards on a landscape. His forehead was high and he had a lisp or what Jamaicans call lisp tongue, therefore he spoke funny.
In spite of being deemed the ugliest man imaginable, Otto was an industrious young man. He was not a brilliant boy in school but he was very manner able and chivalrous to the ladies who would laugh at him. He loved women and enjoyed their company. They enjoyed his because he had a delectable sense of humor and they thought he was very gaudy and arrogant for an ugly man. Women liked when he spoke and entertained his advances because they found it amusing, knowing concretely that Otto would not have a chance with them.
Despite being the ladies man Otto had a very low self esteem brought about by years of being told that his looks were not normal and that he was a very ugly person. Even though he worked very hard to maintain his standard of living and bought expensive clothes they were not sufficient to mask the low self concept that he had developed from years of being jeered and called ugly. He wore the most gaudy, ostentatious clothes and had a band of friends who laughed whenever he approached a woman and she insulted him. His friends enjoyed seeing him burnt by the younger girls who would blatantly tell him he was too ugly for their taste.
