The summary of “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson.
Falling Action – Harris boy gave the letter to Don and Helen Crane, and told them it was from Miss Strangeworth.
Resolution – Miss Strangeworth woke up the next morning, she found out that her anonymous letter for Don and Helen Crane is returned to her. But on the letter there is an extra line of words that says “LOOK OUT AT WHAT USED TO BE YOUR ROSES”.
6. Conflicts: (Person vs. Person) – Miss Strangeworth might seem like a friendly old lady, but her family history and self centeredness makes her to despise the people in “her” town. She writes secret letter to the people in town about their stupidness and flaws.
7. Theme: First point is “What goes around comes around, karma”, Adela Strangeworth has been sending out the messages to the town people based on gossip about the troubling events that they experienced, eventually the roses that are her prides were taken away from her. Another point can be Self Centered. Adela Strangeworth’s family history made her over pride of herself, and caused her to scorn on the town people. Thinking that the town belongs to her and it is her duty to keep the town peaceful. The last point is to consider the courses of your action, and consider the consequences. Maybe the motives of Adela Strangeworth’s letters are positive at first, but the letters caused rumors and suspicion among the town. Making the town unstable.
8. Quotation: “That little girl is going to grow up expecting luxury all her life,” she said to Helen.
Helen laughed. “That’s the way we want her to feel,” she said. “Like a princess.”
“A Princess can see a lot of trouble sometimes,” Miss Strangeworth said dryly. “How old is Her Highness now?”
