A story about the two cats that live at the vet’s office where I used to work.
He lays flat on the concrete floor of the dimly lit hallway. The only movement made is the shallow breaths he takes as he contemplates his next move. His keen eyes follow every movement being made by his adversary. Lowering his head and arching his back, he waits until the perfect moment arises. Then, in a flash, he springs forward like a runner at the starting whistle. Wrapping his arms around his opponent’s neck, Eli brings Peyton to the ground!
Quickly jumping to his feet and regaining his bearing, Peyton scoots to the side without taking his eyes off of his attacker. He gently curls his toes and relaxes them, as if kneading dough. In much the same manner as he was attacked, Peyton leaps through the air, bringing down Eli, slamming his hip against the hard floor, and evening the score!
They break apart, going to separate ends of the hallway, each with his head hung low. Cautiously, both turn their heads, glaring at each other. Simultaneously, both participants choose to take a break. Returning to their “corners”, they each pause and take a long drink of water as if they were dehydrated. Soon, though, they again started to stare at each other with a look of animosity in their eyes.
Suddenly, like a bullet, Eli takes off down the hall, ready to punish Peyton for his presence. But this time Peyton is ready and waiting. He delivers a quick blow to Eli’s cheek and kneels down, tripping Eli. Getting up quickly, Eli turns around and fiercely swats Peyton squarely on the jaw — not once, but twice! Peyton looks dazed and confused as he comes back to his senses after receiving Eli’s onslaught. Sorely, Peyton walks into a room at the end of the hall and lays down on the leather love seat, resting his head on the cushion.
In dismay, because their frolic time is now over, Eli slowly wanders into the room. Wanting to play some more, he paws at Peyton, trying to elicit a response. Out of either exhaustion or boredom, Peyton doesn’t move. With no other choice, Eli jumps up on the love seat, resting his head on Peyton’s side. Soon, both kittens start purring and doze off to sleep.
