Humble Beginnings
Throughout my junior year of high school, I was faced with a dilemma. The past two years, I had utilized my spare time in class by drawing intricate doodles with pictures, quotes, bubble letters, and random shapes that represented both my boredom and entertainment, (See Dooley’s bulletin board for an example). Each doodle was special to me, and after losing all of my freshman doodles in a tragic misplaced folder accident, I grew to realize the importance of the memories each doodle held. I spent my sophomore year hastily making new doodles to replace the ones that were lost, but sadly, they will never be recovered.
I would have loved to continue this wonderful tradition throughout my junior year, but I was severely lacking in two things: time and boredom. I was taking three AP classes, two honors, and band, (of both the marching and non-marching sort), and struggling to maintain a loose grip on my choir participation. These classes and extracurriculars kept me booked or, in the case of Chemistry, cooked throughout the entire year. I was blessed, however, with the foresight of a nerd, and knew to take precautions ahead of time, in order to protect the precious memory making moments that I adored so much. I originally planned to turn my quotes into doodles at the end of the year, but due to the book’s unexpected success, there was already too much to do with those hundreds of sayings.
The idea struck me on that stuffy August day, as I slumped in my skinny jeans against the back of my brown desk in Papa Cap’s poster-covered room. I had a notebook in my purse, waiting for an opportunity to be used. Was this it? Could this be the burden that that sparkly heart-covered notebook was meant to carry and share for the rest of its days? Indeed, it was. I filled in that first quote quickly, being careful not to forget the wording before I could write it down. The book positively glistened with fulfillment: this was the day my little Quebie found his dream.
