“The Red Room” is a story which is filled with suspense. John smith a person came to investigate a room in royal place. It was believed that the room was haunted by the ghost of owner, a duke, who died in mysterious conditions. The housekeepers’ an old man showed him the way. He thought that the housekeepers belong to another age and so they were afraid of ghosts.
He came to the room, lit a candle and watched the surroundings. He saw a shadow on the white panelling. It seemed to have been pouncing upon him. He saw the statue of Ganymede and eagle near by, the shadow of which it fell on the white panneling. His misconception disappeared. He got many candles inside the room and lilted them. There were two big mirrors, a bed with valances, a fire place with glowing charcoal and other articles. He remembered the words of housekeepers “It’s your own choice”.
At midnight the shadow of the statue was glanced again on the white panelling. He did not know that the candle in the recess went out and so the shadow was there. He was in fix.Slowly all the candles vanished one after the other. Finally the red light from the fire place, spread over the room but it was dim. By this time the john was completely under the grip of fear. He was terrified and rushed out in haste. He was afraid of the ghost and ran out. He hit the steps at the door and was hurt. He fell down and became unconscious.
Next morning he found himself with bandages. The housekeepers were at his service. The old man tried to say,” The room is haunted—-”, but the john said “yes, the room is haunted by fear”. When the candles went out, john lost his reasoning power. He hit the door. Fell on the steps and was hurt. So he concluded that: “Fear is thus the greatest enemy of mankind”.
