…The biggest badass, bully and boogieman from childhood… But, he was real…

The Sad Solitary saga of Sam Huston

Sam Huston was like an urban legend in my hometown. The biggest, Black, bad-ass in a town full of bad-asses… Sam seemed to think that he was really “Dolomite”.

Now, Dolomite actually was the biggest, Black, badass that ever existed… Except, he didn’t
really exist at all. He was a tall tale …Like Paul Bunyan, or Pecos Bill…
Red Foxx, before he became a TV star, used to tell the story of Dolomite on (off color XXX)
records…

“At the age of one,
drinkin’ wiskey and gin.
At the age of two,
eating the bottles and cans…

Now Dolomite had an uncle
named “Sudden Death”,
who killed a dozen men
with just the smell
of his breath…”   and so on…

Somehow, as Sam Huston grew up, the wiring in that lump of gray matter most of us call a brain got really fouled up! So Sam, grew up thinking he was Dolomite. This was a guy who
by the age of 14 was carrying a pistol, and robbing small grocery stores. Sam didn’t think
anything of “jacking” someone for their lunch money. And. Sam was a terror to the girls…

The stories they told about Sam Huston were truly terrifying. He was alleged to have sexually assaulted a 16 year old girl, at her own birthday party, in the front yard of her home, one weekend evening…

When I was in High school, there was a really pretty ,and physically mature girl in my Social Studies class. She was a “crush” girl. The kind younger guys would dream about.
I heard her tell a story once, about how Sam accosted her, and told her exactly what he planned to do to her.. She ran all the way home, flat out, horrified.

When I was a freshman in Senior School, I often heard more stories about Sam Hudson…
But, I had never actually seen him.

One day, after lunch, and older guy was in the school hallway. He was well dressed, he was dark and stocky, and he had on sunglasses and a wide brimmed, black hat. He spoke to me
very politely…

“How ya doing?’, he said

“OK.”, I replied

“How much money ya got?”, he asked

I told him I didn’t have any money. He made some comments to the effect that I was dressed well, and so he knew I must have some money… A couple of my friends we standing nearby.
I told him again, that I didn’t have any money…

…”Well”, continued the guy, “If you don’t have any money, you’d better not go outside the school!”

So I told him soberly, “I’m afraid I will have to go outside.”

The guy looked at me quietly…

Then he said, “You one brave little nigga”…

He patted me on the shoulder, and just walked away…

Then my friends told me… “That was Sam Huston”…

I grew up going to a local Church. Our Church often had holiday programs where the children
performed. Even I had opportunities to perform in these holiday pageants.

There was one girl, I grew up with in the Church. Her name was Andrea. She was very lovely. Thin, with a very light complexion, and brown hair. Her mother was also very light, and very dignified looking.

Every time Andrea would perform in a Church pageant, she would break down and start crying and sobbing… Every time…

It somehow , in retrospect, seems a precusor of the tragedy her life would become…

Andrea grew up, went to university, graduated, and married a police officer…

Sam Huston grew older, became a drug dealer, and even more dangerous…

Some where along the line Sam encountered Andrea… Saw her, took one look, and “fell in love”… He wanted her badly, and he had to have her. It didn’t matter to Sam that she was now married to a Cop.   He had to have her… Or, nobody would…

Now, when Andrea had a baby with her husband the Cop… That drove Sam, buggy , over the
edge.

Sam constantly stalked Andrea and her husband. The policeman knew it , and had on several occasions warned Sam off…

One day Andrea and her husband stopped at a gas station in the evening. Andrea’s husband got
out of the car to pay for the gas. he left his wife and infant child in the car.

From out of the shadows, Sam Huston appeared. he approached the passenger side of the car. Andrea was holding her baby inside. Sam raised a pistol, and fired three shots! Two bullets
struck Andrea, killing her instantly. The third bullet struck the infant child in the mouth.

Sam ran off into the darkness of the night.

Hearing the noise, the police officer rushed outside to his wife and child in the car. He was greeted with a scene of mayhem. His wife was dead… Miraculously, the baby had survived. he was rushed to the hospital, and incredibly, made a recovery.

The Police department tracked down Sam Huston. They beat him mercilessly, before throwing him in jail.

Sam ended up going to prison for the rest of his life, for murder and attempted murder.
He had killed an innocent young woman, injured an infant, and destroyed a family…

Sam had lived a life that was truly out of control. It could only end in disaster. The real tragedy was that he had to destroy others along with himself…

And that, was the climax, to the ruinous life of Sam Huston.
