One day a simple walk to the store turns tragic for two young boys.

The Tragedy

It’s 1987 and it was a normal summer day filled with fun and adventure. My brother and I always seemed to find something to get into.

I’m Sean just a normal everyday seven year old boy. I have dark brown hair and hazle eyes. And then there’s my brother Bubba. He is eleven years old. We are close and do everything together. Bubba has blond hair and blue eyed. He is slim and full of adventure. He is kind of the dare devil of the group. He will often try things that we are to afraid to try. Of course that means we have to rescue him sometimes.

A couple of years ago my brother Bubba and I were walking to the store to get my Mother some bread. We walked in the ditch, the same route as we always did. The road was your typical country road. It was paved but it did not have any sidewalks. Our Mother always told us to walk in the ditch so that we would not get hit. A few blocks down we would take a short cut down an old dirt road. At the end of that dirt road on the left was the little store that we often went to.

While we were walking to the store something happen. I only remember a little of what happen but I do know that it was bad. While walking in the ditch that we always walked in I heard Bubba yell,” Watch out! That’s all I seem to remember. I don’t remember the actual accident. As we were walking a drunk driver came barreling down the road out of controll. The truck went off in the ditch that we were walking in and hit the both of us.

Bubba heard the truck coming towards us and that’s when he yelled for me to watch out. My brother may have saved my life that day. When he pushed me I went kind of sideways and the bumper of the truck hit my knees and I swung around and hit the truck with my head. Again I do not remember the actual impact. I was knocked out but I did come to a couple of times. The first time that I came to I remember lying face down in the dirt. I tried to open my eyes but there was so much dirt in my face and eyes that I could not see. That seemed to only last a few seconds and I was back out. The second time that I came to I was lying on someone’s couch. To this day I do not know who it was. I do know it was a lady because I remember hearing her soothing voice telling me that everything is going to be ok. I remember how gentle her hands were as she wiped the dirt and hair off of my face. And again I was out. The third time that I came to I remember being in the ambulance. They were telling me to relax and to take a deep breath. I will never forget the sounds of Bubba as I heard him screaming and crying. My heart was racing I was so scared. At this time I still did not remember what all had happened. The final time that I came to I was in the hospital.
