A tree that told me about the passing seasons.

When I first arrived in Clonakilty, this is the first square I saw. I had gone to town to spend the day. It was a gorgeous summer one and this little square soon caught my eye. People strolled about. Some of them sat on the benches. Whenever I passed by the square, I turned round to look at the tree and this tree told me about the passing seasons. In summer, it grows green and exuberant, giving good shadow to rest. Then, it comes the autumn to turn its leaves into its varied hues. Then, its leaves fall and it seems an enormous skeleton with its bare branches and trunk. The people decorate it with coloured bulbs at Christmas time lighting the square that otherwise would be in darkness in the coldest wintry days.

I think this is the tree I will never forget. It is part of my recent travelling memories. I passed it by and on every occasion I turned round to look at it.

Nice little story. Guess most people look at the statue when they pass it by. Sadly, I was one of them.

what a lovely contemplative piece! I too often passed the Square on my way up Mc curtain Hill and was not aware.
this teaches us to become more aware on our journey through life and to focus on our suttoundings instead of the mental cha tterbox within .

I think it was Padraic Colum who wrote the following before he was executed -

“Poems were mad by fools like me
But only God can make a tree .”

Next time I go to Clon I will look at the tree and remember you
