Chapter two : Integration.
The first meetings of Human kind and the Unicorns had been brief, the Unicorns slaying the mentally and technologically under-developed bipeds, before eating them. This gave limited satisfaction to the two immortal Unicorns who found the meat to chewy and sinewy to be enjoyable to eat and the energy provided was tainted by disease and was short lived.
As the Humans began to develop the Unicorns interest was piqued, rudimentary tools made way to spears and the hunted started to become the hunters, killing any animals that came close to their encampments. With fire playing a strong role in the defences of the now communicative Humans, the Unicorns stayed further back whilst studying the inferior race.
The Unicorns continued to mate with the Earth based horses and soon found that the Humans preferred the bastardised offspring, as they had greater energy and strength and could carry the men and their newly fashioned armour. The Unicorns watched with interest as the Roman Empire came into existence and started to take control over great swathes of land and people.
They entered Rome side by side, walking through to the Palace of Tiberius, the Roman Legions tried to slow their movement but were slain by the two Unicorns, arrows bounced harmlessly from their bodies and any soldier foolish enough to attack with a close quarter weapon was soon despatched with a horn slicing through their armour.
Tiberius himself bravely stood at the head of the flight of stairs and stood in front of the two menacing forms, their breath creating great clouds of smoke from their noses, their eyes a radiant red. Tiberius waved away his guards and walked down the steps to greet these two mighty beasts.
Five steps from the Unicorns he paused and put his hands to his head, heard only by him were the telepathic instructions from the Unicorns, and he began to speak, his voice strengthened by the Unicorns to be heard by all in his Palace.
“We have been chosen by these mighty warriors to be assisted by them. They have travelled from far away to be here and will aid us in the greatest battles. One will carry me personally into all battles and the second will carry my General, they will only be involved with battles that we are both in and will ensure our victories.”
Fearful cheers roared from the auditorium as the Emperor continued, “They will stay for as long as they feel we are the dominant sect of the Human kind, but should they feel that we no longer live up to that promise then they will leave us. Let us stay the mightiest race on this planet.” The cheers continued and the Unicorns were true to their word.
They stayed with the Romans for more than four centuries, carrying more than 50 Emperors into battle and when the mighty city was split East and West, each Unicorn took the leader of their section. When the unicorns were in battle, they were fearless, indestructible and utterly devoid of compassion. They killed enemies, animals and, should they get in their way, members of their own army with rage.
The Roman Empire grew and was feared, the Romans added armoured horns to all their war-horses so that their enemies could not know which animal would carry the Emperor and General and this became a symbol of death to any enemy. The Unicorns could eat what they wanted, lived in luxury and bred copiously with the Roman horses, including their own offspring from centuries earlier, creating strong horses and more fearless ones.
Suddenly, in 434 A.D., the Unicorns disappeared from Rome, as a new warrior race had emerged which while short lived, would be the most powerful on Earth and as such the Unicorn had kept their promises.
