I have gone through things that many people my age do not have to go through. The main reason it is because of my ethnicity. Just few years ago, when I turned 15 years old, I was told the worst news that condemned my life. A story that will make you reflex about many things in life, and the way you see minorities.

As a freshman in high school things were okay. I was 14 years old and my birthday was going to be in only 2 more months from then. I was excited about turning 15 years old, just like any 14 year old would be, because I at the of 15 I was finally going to be allowed to get my permit to drive, get part time jobs at the mall, and it would allow me to do things any 14 year old teen would do. The day kept getting closer, and my anxiety was getting bigger as well. October the 12Th was just a day I thought I would never forget.

It was only a week from my birthday, when my mother called into the room to have a conversation with me. She looked at me with a grim smile, but her eyes were full of deception. I knew right then that good news were not to be expected. I closed the door, so my little brother would not hear the conversation. After my mother sat down, her eyes started to fill with tears, and her heart more than likely shattered in million pieces, because she was about to reveal a mystery of my life. After one minute of silence, which I broke by asking what was wrong, she said to me that the hard effort that I had put into school, life, and more would be shattered after my 15Th birthday.

I was bewildered as to what was going on with the words that she said to me. I could not understand what she meant by saying that my life would not be like I planned. She looked at me in the eyes and said that I was not a legal citizen in the country. That she had moved from her country when I was just 3 years old because my father and her were divorced, and that my plans for the future were now going to be a challenge to achieve.

As a 14 year old I did not understand what all that nonsense meant. It seemed like I was only a day from finding out. On October 12th, 2007, I turned 15 years old. So I called a friend of mine to take me to get my permit, but when we got there I was told that I was not on their system. After talking to the lady for about 10 minutes the only thing I figured out was the I was not on their records because I didn’t have a social security number.
