A teen and his new car…
He’d bought the thing from another kid at the Skill Center for $50.00.
“It looks rough but it runs good” the kid had said.
He sure hadn’t lied about that!
But once you got past all the body rust and the fact that the front fenders were held on with duct tape, it really wasn’t a bad looking car!
“It’ll get me to the Skill Center for auto mechanics class, school, and work and then home…that’s all I care about”, Chris decided matter-of-factly.
The coolest part of this car, so far as the guys were concerned was the far-out look of the interior… with the royal blue shag carpet on the dash and on the floor, white shag on the ceiling and white ostrich feathers lining the dash. This was a man’s car.
Oh! And there was a hole in the floorboard just in front of the accelerator pedal. To most guys this just added to the whole package. It added the flavor of danger and would serve to put the fear of God into Chris’s girlfriend, where his safety was concerned.
It was all just too cool! All the guys at the Skill Center just loved it but the girls?…well…they were another story.
The day after Chris bought the little car he drove it to school and anxiously waited for classes to let out so he could pull up in front of the building and show it off to the pretty girls heading for home. He had to show it off!
Poor Chris hadn’t expected such mortified looks as they stopped, stared open-mouthed and then refused to come near the beast with tires.
“Oh come on, Judy! It won’t bite you! come look at the interior! It’s great!”
But every one of them backed away from the thing, total horror on their faces.
It took some doing but he finally managed to get Judy to go for a ride with him in the wildebeest…and what a sight that was! With the rusted out muffler announcing their arrival l-o-n-g before they arrived anywhere they went, the front fenders rattling and clacking back and forth as if gasping for air and the totally abashed look on Judy’s delicate face, alongside the look of indifference and mischief on Chris’s face was truly memorable.
