A short story about immigration.
“Mummy, where is our new home? What school will I be attending? Do you think I will fit in since I’m Indian? Do you think there will be other Indian children in my class?” were some of the many questions Karishma had for her mother. Joythi just replied by telling her to be quite and that patience is the key to everything. Of course, Karishma obeyed her mother and waited while her father got their luggage. After, checking out from the airport, Karishma and her parents walked around the streets of their new home looking at things they’ve always dreamed about.
New York City was so much more different to Karishma then India. There were a lot more nationalities, food joints, and clothing stores. The people looked much different and seemed more to them self.
“Wow! Papa, look at that tall building… what is it?” asked Karishma.
“That is Times Square. This is where I’ll be working. And see that building way over there? Well that’s our condo, where we’ll be staying. Are you excited still?”
“Hurry, let’s go see! I’ve been waiting for this too long!!”
Karishma ran down the sidewalk which left her parents worried, what would happen to her. Immediately, Joythi took off after Karishma and scolded her, “Karishma! We’re new to this place. Don’t you dare do that again!”
“Sorry mummy. I promise I wont. I’m just so excited” replied Karishma.
Karishma and her parents continued walking towards there new home. They all looked around in amazement at the sight of the beautiful snow- filled Christmas trees, the many cold shoppers with their arms full of bags, and all the playful children having dinner with their parents. As hey looked around, Karishma thought to herself if that’s what her life would be some day, but she realized that her parents would never oblige to such doings since they were not part of the Hindu religion. Karishma kept walking and did not say a word to her parents until they reached their condo.
Once in the condo, all of Karishma’s happiness came back to her. She explored the whole place and thought it was beautiful. All the rooms had already been fully furnished. The kitchen was completely stainless steal, the bathrooms were sparkling white, her room was all pink and her parent’s bedroom looked absolutely royal, as though it was made for a king and queen with beautiful burgundy walls and gold fabric. Karishma stayed in her room and fell asleep right away while her parents stayed up and discussed her future.
