Inner dialog of a youth soccer player.
Just now I’m lying on my bed under the ceiling fan just thinking. We had a soccer game today against the Ravens and was it ever close! We won one to nothing; they’re a pretty good team. But not good enough! I’m Trey and I’m the Sweeper of the Orlando Mavericks Soccer Club.
That was this morning and I’ve already had lunch and a shower. It felt good, too. It was hot and the water even stung a little bit. It felt relaxing, though. I would have hated it even a year ago. But things change, you know? But now I’m older and more mature. More of a man. Thirteen.
I used my new sports soap and shampoo that I got for my birthday last week. It makes you smell like the guy on the Aqua-Velva commercials I guess. Just fresh and clean and ready to flirt with girls.
Girls like Katie Winslow and Monica Deauchamps. They were there to cheer us on today, so I know they saw my awesome slide-tackle.
That even hurt a little bit; my right leg is all skinned up. But you should see the other guy. He got really dirty when he fell right in the mud puddle on edge of the field. I thought they fixed that thing. Guess not.
I could hear some of our fans cheering me on, too.
I could hear my dad and Mike’s dad yelling the entire game on the sideline like a couple of maniacs.
When I knocked that kid into the mud I thought they were going to go crazy! I could hear all of our fans whooping it up and yelling stuff when that happened, saying things like, “Way to go, Trey!” “Get “em, Trey!” Stuff like that.
But my dad was like, “Trey is THE MAN!” He yelled it. Just remembering that makes me feel good.
I”m glad I’m part of this team. It’s a great bunch of guys and we have a whole lot of fun. And it’s fun getting guys dirty; guys on the other team. Even if you get hurt a little. I think it’s called something like compulsiveness. No, competitiveness.
I knew it was one of those C words.
But that’s not my goal or anything, to get people dirty. My goal is to win.
