Shooting dinosaurs and space marines on an alien world, what’s not to like? Here are my thoughts on this game for the X-box 360.

Turok for the X-Box 360 is a first person shooter in which you take on the role of a Native America space marine named Turok as he fights his way across an alien world against dinosaurs and enemy space marines. You’re a former member of the main bad guy’s unit named wolf pack, so the good guys brought you along to arrest him because he’s been doing some vaguely bad things on some planet that has dinosaurs but nobody seemed to know that until your ship was shot down and crashed there. Anyone familiar with the original games will recognize that this game did the bare minimum to earn its title.

The other soldiers are your typical Gears of War, raised on steroids, overly macho morons who take every opportunity to get themselves killed or give you shit about your ridiculous hair cut. The only one with any personality hates your guts because you got his brother killed on some mission by leaving wolf pack because they were killing civilians. You’ll spend about half the game with at least one of these guys as your AI partner, and my advise is to let them do most of the fighting whenever you get the chance because this is one of the hardest games I have played on this system.

The enemy soldiers’ AI is very inconsistent. Sometimes they will just stare at you dumbly while you shoot them, but other times three of them will draw a perfect bead on you and unload their clips into your skull killing you within seconds. Shooting them in the head will kill them quickly, but anywhere else and they just kind of stumble a few times, and it doesn’t help that most of your weapons have more recoil than a gas powered vibrator. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the bad guys can run around you faster than you can turn your body because Turok is slower than a three-legged tortoise.

The first gun you get is almost useless. It’s just a machine gun that isn’t very accurate unless you zoom in. My advice is to dual wield two of these and shoot like crazy. Its secondary mode of fire is just adding a silencer which doesn’t seem to silence anything. You also get a knife which is one of the most useful weapons in the game if you know how to use it, but even it has some serious flaws. One of the main things about using a knife is speed, and Turok has the reflexes of a lobotomized Alzheimer’s
