One fall afternoon, October 31 st to be exact, a mouse named Mason was wandering around an alleyway.
Mason was very hungry due to his 3 week quest to find warmth and a place to stay. The wind was blowing and poor Mason was nearly blown away because he had lost a lot of weight since he began is long, harsh journey.
His journey began when his owner, Desiree, was forced to abandon him. It wasn’t that she didn’t take care of him, she loved him. It’s just that she brought the mouse home unexpectedly. If she didn’t release him, her parents would have killed him. So, releasing him was the only thing she could do.
Nightfall was near. Mason made for the closest house as fast as he could, hoping he would find a mouse hole to rest in. Unfortunately, there was no hole, and as exhausted as he was, he would have to make a hole big enough for him to fit inside. After the hard work, he smelt the scent of fresh cheese. So he went off to search for the cheese.
Mason crawled through the dark hallways and bumped into the gigantic refrigerator. He worked long and hard to open it, and once he opened it, he feasted on a huge block of 100% California Cheddar Cheese. When it was completely devoured, he got thirsty and saw a glass of tomato juice with a bendy straw. He sipped as much as he could possibly imagine. Mason, with his full tummy, was tired and decided to go to bed.
As Mason tried to find the bedroom, he accidentally bumped into the table leg, which caused the glass with tomato juice to spill all over the new carpet. Fernando, the owner of the house, heard the crash and woke up immediately. Mason was scared and hid under the rug because it was the closest place available. Fernando rushed to the dining room and was furious. He saw the tomato juice stained all over his brand new gray carpet. He saw the lump in the rug and picked up the chair and started swinging at it. Poor Mason couldn’t see and Fernando finally hit him. Mason sat still for a second, and Fernando assumed he was dead, so he lifted up the rug to throw the rodent away. As Fernando lifted the rug, Mason ran as quickly as possible, hiding in the hole he had used to enter the house.
The next day, Fernando was afraid that Mason would return, so he went to the pet store and bought a mouse-hunting cat. That’s where he saw One-Eye, an orange Tabby cat who had a feisty nature and a patch over his eye. “Perfect for hunting little mice,” thought Fernando. He was sure he wouldn’t see any mice once he brought One-Eye home. So, he bought a bag of cat food and some cat toys and left.
The next week, Mason was nowhere to be seen. Fernando was shocked. One-Eye would lie around the house all day, only getting up to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom on a pile of newspapers. “Maybe I scared him away,” thought Fernando. “That cat was a waste of money.”
Two weeks later, it all happened again. Mason returned. This time he arrived during the day. As he walked down the hallway, able to see where he was going, he tripped over One-Eye’s tail, which awoken him. The cat hissed and Mason immediately took off running. One-Eye chased after him.
Fernando, who was the bathroom, heard the cat screeching, so he finished his business and ran off to see why One-Eye was screeching. Then, he saw poor Mason hanging from One-Eye’s mouth. Fernando took Mason from One-Eye and went to the dining room to see if there was a spill. There wasn’t.
“Maybe this mouse just needs a place to stay. It means no harm…” mumbled Fernando to One-Eye, as if he were listening. Fernando felt horrible, so he decided to take Mason to the vet to get treated.
Mason was ok. As soon as Mason was able to go home, Fernando went to the pet store and returned One-Eye to buy a cage, some food, and some toys for Mason. As they returned home, Mason had a graceful look on his face. Fernando prepared a feast in honor of the new member of the family, Mason.
