Values analysis.

INTRODUCTION

 

            Stories are told and written not just simply for entertainment but to convey the message and the different purpose of the author. Authors wrote stories, perhaps they want to express what they observed, feels and learned within a particular situation where they see the reality of the world. Several stories displays certain message which teaches us values or moral lesson about life that somehow depicted in our reality nowadays. A message that made his or her reader to reflect with the values depicted in the particular story that we may apply in the reality. Stories that portrays different character that act to deliver the values about life, passion of love, some are inequality of human toward other human and it could about nature of humans or the society itself.

            However, the objectives of this paper are to analyze the literary element depicted in the three short stories authored by a French writer: Guy de Maupassant. Among to these stories are: The Necklace which discussed the values reflected of the story.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SUMMARIES OF THE STORY

THE NECKLACE

            “The Necklace” is a story about the ordinary lady who lives in an ordinary life, no gowns and jewelries which she used to imagines every day. She even wished and dreamed to have an extravagant life. She feels the burden of her poverty intensely. One day she had been giving a chance to be in a formal party. Instead, she chose to be practical as what her husband suggested— she chose the other way of presenting herself. Since it is a minister ball, she demanded thing that beyond in their capacity of living. She wanted to have a beautiful gown and brilliant jewelry.

The fact that they can’t afford to buy jewelry, she borrowed a piece of diamond necklace from her friend. Successfully she presented herself to the ball glamorously that makes every men ask her name and dance with her. But chance was quite earnest to Mathilde because after the ball she lost the thing she borrowed from Madame Loisel. They did everything to find the necklace, they even offered a reward, published in the newspaper and reported to the police but they failed. The decided to replace the lost one, so they look at different shop just to find exactly like the one they had lost. They did everything to the amount they needed. With this unfortunate incident the simple living they had had been ruined. It takes ten years just to pay back the money they lend to get the substitute necklace.
