Vignettes and flashbacks
short story.

He walks with a spring to his step and a smile in his eyes. He brushes his hand over his pocket as he quickens his pace and says out loud, ‘Tonight. It’s time.’ He turns the corner and walks past their favourite restaurant. Something catches his eye, as he slows and turns his head. He rests his hand on the window and peers in. His heart feels like its breaking in two as he watches in disbelief. There she is, the love of his life, with another man, dining in their restaurant. He watches as she looks at this man with coy in her eyes. She places her dainty hand in his as he slips a silver band over her finger. The other diners all cheer and applaud, as she blushes and kisses the man she is with. He yells out her name and bangs on the window with his fist, causing the attention from inside to shift to that outside. She looks up and meets his gaze in disbelief. She stands and moves towards the window with forlorn in her eyes. He lowers his bottom lip and wipes away a tear, throwing his daisies in the gutter and runs off.

He paces backwards and forwards. Tears lightly coat his cheeks. Without caution he collapses from his feet, hugs his knees and slowly rocks backwards and forwards. Dropping his legs, he dangles them effortlessly over and inches his weight forward ever so slightly, teetering on the edge. He clenches his hands tighter, causing his knuckles to go white. He screams to the night for it to only fall on deaf ears. Reaching into his pocket he pulls out the velvet box and places it next to him. He looks at it with hate and stupidity. He closes his eyes as tight as he can, erasing every happy memory he had of her, of everything he thought he knew, and of everything that was keeping him alive. He sighs and opens his eyes again, gazing at the city skyline before him, the lights dance on the horizon. He looks up at the stars as they slowly bring him back to the world. He gazes at the box again, as if it’s calling to him. He picks it up, opening it slowly, knowing full well what is inside. He takes it out and throws the box into the distance, losing it into the night sky. He folds his fingers around it and closes his eyes once again, muttering to himself what sounds like, ‘forever and ever’. Opening his palm, the daisy ring floats slowly to the ground below, as he too slips into his own eternal dreamland.
