Short story about ways a child wakes up parents.
Once our daughter started toddling around, sleeping on the outside part of the bed became hazardous to our health. She certainly enjoyed it though.
When I slept on the outside, she’d put her face up to mine, nose to nose. So I’d come out of a deep sleep eyeball to eyeball with a face. I couldn’t keep myself from screaming each time. She’d giggle and go back to bed till the next wake up. I’d lay there trying to remember how to breathe.
I switched places with my husband. She gave him nights to remember too.
We used cloth diapers on her. That means a diaper pail. For those of you who’ve never had one, it’s a tiny little pail that has a huge build-up of ammonia smell from fermenting diapers.
My daughter thought Daddy should be up. Or maybe her diaper needed changed. Whichever, she took steps. Dad didn’t get up, so she took the diaper pail lid and pushed it into his face. He got up real fast then!
We moved the pail out of reach. So the next time she wanted someone up, she had to find something new. We used an alarm clock, so she used it too. With a variation. She took the clock and banged it on Daddy’s head. It only took a couple bangs to get Dad moving, so I guess that was a success.
I refused to move back to that side of the bed. It was a whole lot safer by the wall!
