The purpose of Oliver and Barbara’s relationship was to determine whether or not they were compatible and committed to each other. They fell in love almost instantly and were quick to jump into bed with one another. They were also quick to move in with each other, get married and have children.
The father (Oliver) is a Harvard graduate. Oliver was a very fortunate child; he grew up in a very wealthy household. Oliver is a very hard working and motivated person. Oliver’s status in the family is the provider. Oliver’s role is to provide money, food and shelter to his wife and two children (Carolyn and Josh). The mother (Barbara) is not as well educated as Oliver. She came from a lower to middle class family. Barbara’s status in the family is a stay at home mom. Barbara’s roles are to take care of their two children, prepare meals, and clean the house. Barbara takes care of all of the household chores. There is no shared responsibility between both individuals. The Rose family was a normal family. The wife stayed home and the father brought home the money. The first couple years of their relationship were very structured and healthy. However, as time progressed Barbara grew tired of being a stay at home mom. Her children were preparing to move out and she decided that it would be the perfect time to start her own business. Oliver was not supportive of the idea and believed that it would be a waste of time. She was not pleased with his response and decided to proceed without his approval. A conflict theory type of scenario ensued. Barbara felt inadequate and believed that Oliver was not the loving husband he once was. Several days later Oliver was rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack during a business meeting. Barbara chose to not visit him at the hospital and proceeded with her own business plans. Later that night, Barbara, revealed that she had become overjoyed at the thought of Oliver possibly being dead. She told Oliver that she did not have the same feelings for him and asked for a divorce. Oliver decided that they would stay divorced but still cohabitate in the same household. Oliver and Barbara began making each other’s lives miserable. They were striving for power and control of the household. Their once healthy and structured marriage became sour.
