Speculating about technology and the convenience of living life tomorrow, today.

Let’s face it, despite that we’re mostly embarrassed whenever our broadband connection and computer programs go haywire we couldn’t afford to get back to our old ways. By “old ways” I mean writing through pen and paper or a manual typewriter and getting your references through textbooks and dictionaries on whichever bookshelves and drawers you may have kept them. Now going through those pages and inhaling the dusted pages which could activate your allergy, you may have lost your point of thinking what word was that you’re supposed to look for when you blow a sneeze. Haaaaaatchhhhooow! Hmmnnnn, what was that I’m looking for?

Consider the present moment that you are seated in front of your computer and typing your article (considering the broadband connection and programs were running smoothly) with such an ease that you could merely move your fingertips to initiate a search through google to find the appropriate words that best describe the meaning your ideas have in mind. We maybe embarrassed from time to time but the novelty of the technology was well worth it.

When I was on my desperate years after graduating from high school, I recall having been inspired by the magazines my cousin sent home from Manila. She used to be working at the Post Office at Villamor Air base in Pasay and there had been loads of Military Technology and aviation magazines from subscribers who has changed their address that the postman failed to deliver. All those magazines way back in the latter 80s gave me a glance at what the future technology may look like and I was filled with such awe and inspiration that eventually led me to shift my Fine Arts course to Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in college. When I finally left the province to take the sailing ship to Manila I remembered painting inspirational lines on an illustration board which I  posted by the wall of my room just so I could look at it and contain my feeling of longing for being separated from the house which has sheltered me for 17 years. I couldn’t fully recall the exact words but it goes this way, “ Imagine a future where everything could be attained at a touch of a button and such state of ease comes at a price; consider the present world (1988) where human failure could be rooted to a restless mind who would likely resort to sensual pleasure to attain instant fulfillment that would eventually hinder his drive to achieve greater heights. Consider resisting that routine flow of life’s temptation and soon enough, you reap the future”.

I could get teary eyed how I left the house on such fateful day and everything happened at a flash forward (am I committing a crime by using that term from the famous TV series?)to this moment I am musing how to end this writing. I have to finish the end sentence for this post and as you may know, I have reaped the prize of the future today.

It might be fair to say that at every age technology was advancing in some way or another, however, we live at a time when we have a glimpse of a rather startling future, if culture such as religion and imaginative beliefs do not successfully circumvent the ability of objective science and invention to perform, then one day we may become the children of the stars and acquire the ability to save ourselves from the dangerous and (eventually) hostile universe.

I envy your broadband. I hate dial-up so bad I could puke. I mean, throw up.

I always think typing on an old fashioned typewriter is so romantic, you only have to read or watch \”Misery\” to see the advantages!! Hhehehehehe Great write up x

I think if our children had to sit down and write a letter by hand, they would just keel over and die. Technology does have its advantages, but we have a whole generation coming up who can’t spell due to texting and “internet speak”.

Very cool thoughts you share DB. There’ nothing like picking up a great book and reading it wherever you are. The pitfalls of technology can de-evolve the natural order of progression in the ‘old school’ style of learning. We’re in a different era DB…..Thomas Friedman’s book ‘The World Is Flat’ is a great reference laying out what looks to be the future now. I have to admit I use the online Thesaurus sometimes.

You made some very valid point, valid but scary. You used words like pen, and paper actually I don’t think that it would be so back getting back to basics.

    Excellent article!

You are so true. One of my friend broke her IPhone and told me she cannot live without it. Amazing how we become so dependent on technology even for simple tasks.

Very well written. You are a good writer. Thanks for sharing your beautiful story.

I love technology, things to make life much easier, however;I am an old fashioned girl and I would prefer pen and paper. As far as writing is concerned I would rather not have to depend on technology to use my mind. Besides once I am done writing my thoughts on the paper, I then transfer that to the computer and that way it is almost like editing my thoughts at the same time. I will admit I could not live without my computer! Technology is rather scary when you think about it especially with the younger aged kids who find it much easier to right click on the word that is wrong and fix it then actually learn it. Excellent write as always Will and a highly enjoyable read!

Such a lovely post, my friend.

  • CA Johnson on Nov 3, 2009

I enjoyed reading your article. I still use a pen and paper to write my articles. LOL! I agree that technology certainly has changed things for writers.

  • J J Neuman on Nov 3, 2009

I’ve done it the old fashioned way B.C. (before computers) and with today’s internet and I like it much better today. Less time researching and more time to focus on ideas.

  • CHAN LEE PENG on Nov 3, 2009

Technology does make our life easier and convenient but sometimes it can bring us disaster too. Well, of course, I agree that technology has made writer’s life easier than previously.

  • Ruby Hawk on Nov 3, 2009

Today’s technology is truely amazing and I appreciate it most of the time but I did enjoy going to the mailbox and finding a long juicy letter with all the news. I miss things we don’t have any more.

  • OnlineAnalyst on Nov 4, 2009

A perfect article to show that human effort cannot be undermined and replaced with technological advancement.Though both again have their own pros and cons.Nice article.

  • Lostash on Nov 4, 2009

Technology is fascinating and makes life so much easier, BUT, I think we do lose sight of some of the simpler things in life. I’ve sat here for over an hour already…..I could have done so many other things in that time.

  • papaleng on Nov 5, 2009

Though advancement carries with it Ease,I have to go nostalgic, more romantic.
