A short story of a lucky B-24 in 1943. There is a twist!
We need help from above?
A lone B-24 consolidated Liberator heavy bomber over Germany in 1943.
“Watch out for anymore fighters crew its around an hour to the coast. Clive how is my damage report coming?”
Lieutenant Clive Widows leant over the pilot and said,
“Roger the right waste gunner is dead. The rear gunner has a bullet in his arm. No2 engine is vibrating to hell I think the prop or spinner has taken a hit. We have saved some of the fuel from the punctured wing fuel tank, but were in a hell of a mess back here”

Clive gently lifted the dead co-pilot out of his seat and placed him on the floor next to the waste gunner. Aircrafts man first class Adrian Mellor’s climbed out of his ball turret and shouted down that he was out of ammunition and the Perspex glass on his turret was smashed in the last fighter pass. Adrian was 19 years old and the son of preacher from way down south in America. He had shocking ginger hair and piercing green eyes. He spoke to the wounded rear gunner first,
“Come with me I want to try something, just trust me”
The two airmen struggled over the bodies and spent shell casings until they reached the Navigators position. Adrian opened the curtain and said,
“George I need you quick come here!”
The Navigator assuming this was urgent unplugged his mask and climbed out of his warm position. They were now three. Adrian whistled and managed to catch the Bombardier’s attention,
“Hey Archie come here I need you quickly”
Archie obliged and crawled pass the sweating pilot who was fighting to keep the heavy B-24 aloft! All eyes were on Archie, he said,
“This ain’t good fellas the Captain is a great pilot but this ole ship is creaking and bucking and we are far from home, in my view there is only one thing we can do!”
Archie said,
“Bail out we’ll be shot on sight you idiot”
Adrian continued,
“No, we pray, we pray to God and hold hands. You know my father is a preacher and he is a damn good one! This will work”
The other three airmen shook their heads in disbelief, Adrian continued,
