The robbers were so surprised that they could not imagine what was happening! They ran away from the house as quickly as they could and found a hiding place in the depths of the forest.
One day an old donkey overheard his master, an unkind miller, threatening to sell him because he was too old to work. The donkey thought, `I will run away to Bremen and try to become a musician, as I have always wanted to do.’
While traveling, the donkey met a dog who was also running away. `/my master no longer wants me because I am too old to hunt,’ said the dog’, `and I do not know what to do or where to go?’
`I am going to Bremen. Why do not you come with me?’ the donkey Said.
So, the dog accompanied the donkey and they started off.
Soon they met a very miserable cat. The cat was too old to catch the mice. So her mistress wanted to give her away. The cat set out, on her own but she did not know which way to go.
1Then join us,’ the dog and the donkey said,’ you can be a musician in Bremen.’
And so, the three animals set out together.
After traveling a short distance, they heard a cock crowing loudly. They stopped to ask him why.
To day is the, my last day for crowing,’ he answered, `because tomorrow my mistress is going to make me into soup.’
`Come with us then, `said the donkey. `We are going to Bremen to become musicians and you voice will be of great help for us.’
The cock agreed and the four walked on together.
In the traveling when it grew dark, they stopped in a forest. The cat and the cock climbed up a high tree, while the donkey and the dog lay down under the tree.
Suddenly the cock called his friends and told them that there was a lighted house in the forest.
They went to the house and observed it carefully. They found that the house belonged to four robbers who were seated around a table laden with delicious food.
The animals worked out plan to drive the robbers away from the house. The donkey placed his front feet on the window still, the dog climbed on the donkey’s back. The cat jumped onto the dog’s back and the cock flew up and preached on the cat’s head.
Then they all started to make their own kind of music; they donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat meowed and the cock crowed.
What a terrible noise they made! Then the animals dashed through the window, shattering the glass and ran into the room.
The robbers were so surprised that they could not imagine what was happening! They ran away from the house as quickly as they could and found a hiding place in the depths of the forest.
Since the animals were hungry, they enjoyed the food and fell fast asleep.
Creeping quietly from their hiding place to the edge of the woods, the robbers could see that the house was in darkness.
