WHAT IS GOING ON IN CARDDERSVILLE
Amos Roswell Card sat on his front porch enjoying the evening air and watching the night sky as he often did. He was a star gazer, a sky watcher, when he wasn’t farming his land or helping Maizie, she’s his wife, though rumor is they aren’t really married, down at Card’s Village Market, over on Main Street.
No one knows where Amos Card came from. He just showed up one day a little over 50 years ago and it weren’t long before he took up with Maize Turner and he bought this farm on the north side of town and he and Maizie commenced livin’ together. Amos don’t talk much about himself but Maizie says as a boy he’d lived in New Mexico and had been movin’ around a lot until he came here to Carddersville.
There was an Angus Von Cardderoffski who’d come to America soon after the Revolutionary War and changed his name to Cardder here in America. He’d been a sheep farmer and had been given a sizable land grant. He’s the founding father of Carddersville. He and his wife had a large family 13 children and they all lived and those children had children and so on and have spread out across the country as families do. Some went west, others south and some just disappeared or changed their name again, who knows.
Folks ‘round about just assume Angus is no doubt some distant kin to Amos and Amos or his father or grandfather just shortened their name to Card, easier to spell and all that; or maybe they were, are hiding something. Someone is hiding something around here. That is for sure. Amos Card is missing.
Amos believed aliens have invaded the Earth and that they came from a planet do east from the center point in Orion’s Belt. He claims he has seen them and talked with them and they visit his farm three or four times a year. He has his own private club house on the far side of his pumpkin patch where he has a ham radio, telescope and other such equipment. It is also where he has a still and makes his own batch of corn liquer or hooch as he calls it, much to Maizie’s disapproval.
