My friend was stress at useless weeds growing in his fertile field. He wanted to destroy the wheat to get rid of the weeds. I tried to remind him that for more than 2000 years weeds has been a problem to wheat growers. I also wanted him to understand that many things promoted as good in life will rob us of our health, wealth, and soul. The creator gave us the capacity to choose wisely.

Wheat and useless weeds growing together

One day I was sitting and talking with my friend and he said something that baffled me. He spoke of weeds growing in his father’s wheat field. Where I grew up we called the weeds coffee weeds because when grown they turned dark brown like coffee and if I remember correctly they had a slight coffee smell. The weeds were thick in some parts of the wheat field and gave the field a dark brown hue. He spoke of how the weeds took vital nutrients needed by the wheat and reduced wheat production. He explained that the seed planted during the wheat planting were pure seed with no trash that could have grown the weeds. The weeds were a real problem because there was and still is no method of removing them with causing serious damage to the growing wheat. He seemed most concerned about how the seed got into the wheat field.

He walked me around the wheat field and pointed out to me the pattern of growth those weeds took. The only place they appeared in the field was at the base of a small hill in the natural contour of the field. It so happened that this area was readily visible to him as he rose each morning. He was a veteran and I was disturbed at his pattern of thinking concerning the weeds. He seemed to indicate that he felt that the growth of the weeds was aimed at his security.  That led me to be concerned about his mental stability. His real desire seemed to be that of being rid of the weeds. He mentioned burning the entire field to get rid of the weeds. I pointed out to him that the value of the wheat growing in the field was much greater than a few weeds. I wanted him to see that it would be a waste to destroy the wheat field because of his disgust for the weeds.

There was something else on his mind and I could feel it. I saw this as a chance to calm my friend and possibly prevent him from going off the deep end. I remembered watching a combine operation a year or so back and I had been impressed with the separation of the weeds and wheat. I took him in the car and we drove towards the high plains. We arrived at a field that was under harvest. Then we saw an area that had the unwanted weeds. There was and area that had been cut and right beside it was an area waiting to be cut. I found a stalk of wheat that the grains had been removed from and saved to the combine. I then searched out the weed that had been cut with the wheat. I had a graphic illustration. We sat there in that field and we talked about things that ought not to be and things that should be. I explained to him that life is filled with things which are intended to keep us from reaching our true destines and that set before us are right choices and wrong choices. Every day is a battle to make the right choice, but we can make the right choice. We have to really struggle to make a wrong choice. It is in our nature to make the right choice.
