Love at sixteen is indeed sweet, but, will it last long?
Diane was fourteen years old when she met Ron in the local secondary school. Both knew that if the gods will allow it, they should be keeping their relationship for keeps. They feel that they are soul-mates that shouldn’t be separated in this lifetime- whew! So romantic. They were called the beautiful couple in the campus and indeed their aura can tell you so –
Unfortunately, behind that bewitching personalities, lies the emotional turmoil in the hearts of adolescents, trying to act as adults. When the green devil called ‘jealousy’, or the red warrior called ‘insecurity’ demand a time from them, both will need an audience to vent their unspoken frustrations – and that would be the loyal friends who generously spared the time to listen & give lame and unsure advices. By the way, what can teen- agers tell to another, what to do or guide when life they thought was perfect, was full of bumps and turns after all?
Uhmm let us think: if the boy gets to be unreasonable, goes with his gang for some drinking sprees, and forgot to pick you up from school, the quick fix will be endless ranting or silent treatment or worse, the threat of breaking off with him. And what should be the gauge of measurement for the girl who doesn’t toe in line? If she gets demanding and bitchy, well, get rid of her.. haha the group of boys who graciously shared this insightful idiotic thoughts were giddy with laughter after sharing this. Then we stop and think harder: what is really love for the teen-agers? What happen to the popular song that says: Love is a many splendored thing? Isn’t love patient, loyal, faithful, sincere, honest, and whatever beautiful words that’s been written at the ‘Desiderata’ ?
Graduation in high school came and went, Diane and Ron survived until the time Diane firmed up her resolve to finish her college studies on schedule so she can find good work and help the family. Now, the problem materialized that since both are not enrolled in the same campus, both will need to make major adjustments. Holy cow! the university life, both realized, is not like in secondary school. The parents of Ron cannot believe that their son has been expelled from his school due to absences. And they asked, where was he during school hours then? Uhmm he was in the other school all those time where he doesn’t have business being in, hanging around friends and wait up for Diane.
