A poem I recall my mother recited many times throughout my life with full dramatization.
When Pa begins to shave
recited by Doris Weaver
Last night Pa got his razor out
Shaving cup and brush
and said to ma now Liza Jane
You make those children hush
For noise sets all my nerves on edge
I can’t stand any racket
The first one that speaks or jumps about
I’ll tan that youngsters jacket
And there we sat so perfect still
We daresn’t even wiggle
But sometimes when he squints at us
We can’t hold in a giggle.
And when he lathers up his face
And makes it scary white
oooo, we want to scream out loud
But, it wouldn’t be per light.
And then he starts his face to shave
And draws his mouth down sooo
And with his razor in his hand
He starts his beard to mow
I tell you little kids like us
Need to be pretty brave
To watch and see what’s going on
When Pa begins to shave
