A short story about vampires.

When the Awakened Fall

I stalked my prey as she slowly moved down the street, walking alone at the worst time of night. The darkest hours of the night are the best time for people like me, if you can call us people, to come out and hunt the streets.

My prey is moving in perfect direction, away from where I live. That way the police won’t be crawling the streets near me when the girl goes missing.  She turns down a dark alley and I quickly decide it is time for me to strike. I use my super human speed to position myself ahead of her, standing right in her path. She gasps, in surprise and a small smile plays at the edges of my mouth.

“Why would you turn down a dark alley at night, girl?” I drawl.

Then, unexpectedly, she smiles back, “To make sure no one saw me do this.” She whispers before shoving a wooden stake through my stomach. I didn’t even see where she had gotten it from, because it was my turn to gasp… in pain.

“What…?” I rasped

That was all I had time to say because next she pulled the stake back out of my stomach and plunged it deep into my heart. The pain was excruciating and the last thing I heard was her voice.

“Die, vampire!”
