Narrates my maternal grandmother’s following of the Cantonese pietist movement or pei shan shenism culture and insights into the developement of Chinese festival foods and Chinese paranomic detective fiction based on song dynasty Neo-confucious metaphysics.
From the days of my childhood I was extremely fond of intrCheif Justice Bao igging Chinese paranomic detective stories of mystery and suspense of the famous Song dynasty Chief Justice Bao . He practised as according to the literate and philosophical vogue of his time the popular vogue of Song dynasty Confucious metaphysic. This is an antiquated belief which sought to amalgamate the developing trend of popular Chinese Daoist philosophy and folklore , Mahanyna Zen Buddhism while preserving the more unorthodox but revised confucious classics of the code of conduct , societal harmony and virtures and great learning or the Da xue . Expounded by the historically distinguished Neo-confucion Scholar , Zhu Xi who was the brillantly learned , advocater and founder of the day , its blend of Neo confucious philosophy composed of the teaching of Tian Li and Li xue and chi or inner vitality or cosmic synergies created a combination of the way of heavenly truth , great learning, correct conduct, ethical principas and disciplined civil conciousness.
As according to Leon Comber , Chief Justice Bao’s transcantional mediative approach as narrated in the Temple bythe River Mystery in The Strange Cases of Magistrate Bao was this revised confuciois ethos combined with Astral Qigong projections in connection to The Jade emperor as the pure Almighty Heaven and creator and Mahanyna Zen Buddhist Qigong mediatation which spreaded into China since the Later Liang Dynasty with the arrival of Bodhi Dhama . This Zen patriach promugated Zen Buddhism which spreaded From India into Korea, Japan and China. The result of this practice was that everytime when Magistrate Bao had very difficult and egmamtic unresolvable criminal cases , the Chinese goddess of Mercy would timly intervene and come to his aid pointing out the vital clues .
Thus my spiritually awareness reached its zenieth when I was 15 years old , I was very aware of the custom and practices of the Cantonese pietiest movement of Pai shen gao or shenism within my family circle and oberserved my maternal grandmother piously propritating her Guan yin. Besides her daily and nightly prayers, she annually , dilligently , unfailingly and merticulously made the tradtional Cantonese Chinese New year cake .
This Chinese new year cake was made with very intense unsappring labour of grinding the seame onto a huge grind stone mixed into a brownish paste with low gluton flour . The next morning on the actual day of the Chinese New year , she would raise a triangular folded three legged alter to laden with succulent globular Mandarin oranges arranged in a pyramid formation as the traditonal auspicious offering. They were placed beside the already prepared New year cakes . Joss sticks lit and its fuming smoke arose to the diety of Heaven as she placed them into the shrine made out of of tin which was mounted onto the wall below the veranda .
