Love is such a sweet word. It paints a picture of tenderness and affection in our mind. However, lately, a very different kind of love is becoming more and more prevalent – the love of one’s self. Loving yourself or having a self esteem is not really bad but, thinking of nothing more but to please yourself is a different story. That is why I don’t agree to a song lyrics that says “learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all,” of course it isn’t. On the contrary, it is the least important love of all. 

Loving one’s self above all may also be a root of evil things because it triggers a deadly chain reaction. For one, if you love yourself so much, you would wanna give yourself the best of everything and thus you’ll need money to do that. And if you don’t have money, chances are you will do everything, even evil things,  just to acquire some. If you already have the money, it could be more dangerous as these pieces of paper currently rules the world; so you may now do unimaginable things that aren’t even possible when you don’t have the money. People pay to kill people, to bribe, to cover up crimes and many other evil deeds like these. Too much love for one’s self leads to seeking pleasure even if it is a forbidden one. Many people smoke, use illegal drugs and even oppress others just for their own pleasure. 

I knew this fact all along but I was reminded by a specific incident discussed here. If you’ve clicked on the link, you’ll notice that these crimes are made because of loving one’s self. The suspect might be a drug addict (another way of pleasing one’s self) and would like to please himself even more so he raped and killed the poor girl. What a sad consequence for loving one’s self more than anything or anyone else.
