Finding your way in Cornwall is not always easy but the rewards can be great when you venture away from the beaten track. Attracted to Cornwall for a flower festival, the writer finds greater charm in its beautiful setting.

In fact, there is everything for the garden at this Show, from garden greenhouses, to tools and sheds, furniture and pots, plants and ornaments, flowers, bulbs, air plants and bird boxes. Hungry garden lovers are fed inside tents with Cornish fare with not so Cornish contents: ostrich and buffalo are now tucked into the famous crust where the rest of us still argue whether mere carrots belong within. Exhibitors and traders are staked out round the edges of the show so within the precinct of this lovely home and its hamlet of cottage and church you can wander lonely as a cloud and fill your heart with hopes of a garden to end all gardens. To be serious, it’s a wonderful place to people watch …. take the family …. all of them …. for a long day out …. because while the Show itself has been and gone for another year, the gardens and the house itself are only just beginning to do their thing.

Best by far of all our experience of Sunday is the leafy walk beneath mature trees of the estate gardens. We flop on the hillside bank, strewn with primroses, sorrel and violets, to soak up the sunshine and sniff the scented air under the thin shadow of an early magnolia. We walk the wooded path under a paradise of camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas and stroke the exotic gloss leaves of a specimen or two whose branches reach out to touch us. The vista across polished spring fields and hills as we walk the wall perimeter of the church and cottages is breathtaking. Go. It’s this wonderful estate in the most grand of settings which leads us to wax lyrical about this day. Boconnoc is open through early summer for Sunday walks, secluded, quiet and beautiful in real Cornish tradition.
