The tenant farmers of Ireland in the early 19th century were “sore oppressed”. The worked land that was owned by English absentee landlords, and most of their meagre income went in rent. At the time, one third of people in Ireland didn’t live in houses, but in lean-to shelters, even holes in the hillside covered with thatch. These lyrics are from a song suite I’m working on, called “The Life of Tom Sweeney”.
