This is a poem writing back in 1982 and is the response of the writer to living in a home with alcoholics in the mist. Mostly, it deals with the love – hate relationships that were going on in the home and the fighting that went on only when alcohol had taken an active role. The poem gives meaning to what the writer viewed as a normal family day.

I’m 15 years old. I have been drinking since I was 12. My father is an alcoholic, and I never talk to him. My sophmore year, I skipped out of a pep rally before a big game to go drink.

I ended up in my first AA meeting around May of ‘09 and was on the fence, but when I heard this fifty year old man tell his story and I could relate, I figured that I might have a problem.

The thorn in your flesh is your addiction to alcohol that continues gnawing at your soul. Confront this problem by fighting against it and by seeking help from Alcoholics Anonymous.
