In 1896, A.E. Housman wrote a poem entitled "To An Athlete Dying Young". In it he tells of a town’s prized athlete whose life ends suddenly, at a young age. He was "fortunate" enough to die while his fame yet lived.

In 1981, I wrote a poem called The Weight Room (or To An Athlete Dying Daily), which takes a poke at some of the boys in my high school who were trying to "run with the big dogs". There was a price to pay for trying to be something they were not.

My eldest daughter was going to have my head soon if I didn’t publish this somewhere – she absolutely LOVES this one!
