The benefit of seeing the Jolly Roger was that it let on that the ship itself was most definitely a pirate’s ship. Smart ships with an experienced and wise crew always ran from a confrontation with pirate ships. Pirating became so widespread that at one point the English and French governments offered rewards to sailors who could capture pirates alive. After a trial, these pirates would oftentimes be hanged.
