Boy scouts and men had knives we always carried, mostly small "pocket knives" for triming a fingernail or to make yourself a tooth pickor many other small jobs that required a quick fix. When I was a Scout it was required that we have a knife as part of our equipment. My dad got me my first knife and it was a Boy Scout Knife in 1944 while he was working at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
