Workers drilling the tunnel removed the final few feet of rock on that day to complete an idea that had been first suggested in 1802.

It affected not just southern England but also the English Channel, the stretch of water that separates England from France. Winds of 120 mph began on the 24th November and continued until the 2nd of December.
