On a Sunday in January 1985, I photographed Mother Teresa extensively at her convent in Anyang, South Korea. Later, I’d receive about 17 letters from her over a seven-year period. It was inspiring to meet and photograph her, and her letters to me and my son, Matthew, who is half-Korean, are equally important to us. Of course, in order for my son to be born in the first place, some things had to happen in a certain sequence; and they eventually did.

David Johns, my friend from Mizzou and Yonhap colleague, and I covered several leading women of Korea, hoping to publish our photo-essay in Life Magazine.
