The English seaman and explorer Francis Drake departed from Plymouth, England on December 13th 1577 with the intention of raiding Spanish holdings on the pacific coast of the New World as well as explore the Pacific Ocean. He returned to Plymouth three years later having been the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe.
