The Golondrina or Swallow is a common immigrant bird that visits many areas from my state San Luis Potosi, Mexico every summer. The swallow is commonly associated with farewells in Mexico. There is a Mexican song called "Las Golondrinas" and it is often performed in graduations, farewell parties, and funerals. This song was performed in the movie "The Wild Bunch." Although saying good-bye is always so painful, the speaker in my poem longs to be like the swallow, so that she can also fly and escape from the boring life in her town. She has never been beyond the hills that surround her, and the only proof she has that there are "other worlds" out there is the swallow.
