The meaning of the pen, quill, and pencil.

I wrote this short story about what I presume a young settler would of felt like as he witnesses the completion of the transcontinental railroad. By completion I mean the opening ceremonies as they struck the golden spike into the railroad officially opening the gate way to the west. This story is more interesting than the description, I promise.
